To recover from the COVID-19 impacts on our community San Franciscans will need our college more than ever! On Wed. 4/1 at 3pm we’re having a virtual listening session via Zoom for AFT 2121 members to learn about, ask questions, and give input on our proposal to bring more funds to CCSF by establishing the Community Higher Education Fund. All AFT 2121 members are invited to join us.

AFT 2121 elections nominations deadline extended

The AFT 2121 Election Commission has extended nomination for the upcoming AFT 2121 Officers, Reps-at-Large, and Delegates elections until Friday, April 3, at 5pm.

If you missed the deadline or had difficulties accessing AFT’s online General Membership meeting, you may nominate yourself by sending an email to: Dayna Holz, Secretary, AFT 2121 at dholz@aft2121.org stating the office you are nominating yourself for.

AFT 2121 first virtual General Membership meeting – historic and successful!

Because of the current coronavirus crisis, we held our March General Membership meeting via Zoom. To our delight, the meeting was incredibly well attended — 99 union members participated! The chat function gave members a new way to have meaningful discussion. The raised hand icons allowed all those who wanted to actually speak, to do so.

We nominated officers for our upcoming election, as well as discussing ways to support each other academically and personally in the current crisis. Our officer elections are proceeding. Elections for precinct representatives will be delayed until fall semester. Please be on the lookout for more information coming soon.

Chancellor Rocha placed on administrative leave

Dear AFT 2121 Members:

A few moments ago, Board of Trustees President Shanell Williams informed us that Mark Rocha has been placed on administrative leave. The board will appoint an acting Chancellor this week, and then an Interim Chancellor to fill the position while the board conducts a search. That’s all the information we have at the moment, but we will update you as we learn more.

In Unity,

Jennifer Worley
President, AFT 2121

President’s message: COVID and advocating for a fully funded CCSF

Dear AFT 2121 Members:

I’m hoping this finds you and yours safe and well. I know your minds are on the terrible COVID-19 crisis, and on meeting the challenges of remote instruction during an already difficult time, but I want to give you some positive news about AFT 2121’s continuing efforts to secure long term, permanent funding for our college, even as we respond to this crisis.

First, a victory: thanks to all of our members who collected signatures for the Schools and Communities first ballot initiative over the past few months, AFT 2121 has collected 2,267 signatures — nearly double our 1200 signature goal! Next up, the state will verify all signatures, and if the statewide threshold is met, Schools and Communities First will go to voters on the November 2020 state ballot.

If you would still like to turn in any remaining Schools and Communities First Petitions, please keep a count of the total signatures, put our code “19” in the box on the bottom right, and mail them ASAP to:

Dana Gonzalez
26500 West Agoura Rd
Suite 102-146
Calabasas, CA 91302

Save your receipt and AFT 2121 will reimburse you for the postage. Please share your signature count and questions about reimbursement with Tim Killikelly (tkillikelly@aft2121.org).

At the local level, the Community Higher Education Fund (CHEF) is definitely still cooking. While we have delayed our planned campaign kick-off event because of the COVID19 crisis, plans are still very much on track to place CHEF on the November ballot as a City Charter amendment guaranteeing $42 million in city funding to City College for classes and student services.

Because CHEF will not take effect until 2021, we’ve also begun building support for a “bridge to CHEF” (some are calling it “sous Chef”) to prevent further cuts to City College in the meantime. We are urging city leaders to include support for City College in the City’s plans for recovery from COVID-19. Experience shows that in economic downturns, people return to school to gain new skills, start or finish degrees, or train for new careers. Our city must prepare for this by ensuring that City College — our city’s educational first responder — is fully funded and ready to offer the rich, diverse curriculum that the people of San Francisco deserve.

Finally, I want to leave you with some links to some COVID-19 resources and information from our state and federal union affiliates:

Please take good care of yourselves, your loved ones, and our larger community by adhering to the statewide “stay home” order, maintaining distance from others when you must go out, and washing hands upon return and frequently throughout the day. Stay safe and union strong!

In Unity,

Jenny Worley
AFT 2121 President

CFT holding tele-townhalls on COVID-19 today

Dear AFT 2121 members:

Our state affiliate, CFT, is holding two tele-townhalls today in order to share the latest COVID-19 information and hear questions from members directly.

CFT member tele-townhalls on Wednesday, March 18:
  • The first will be at 4:30pm.
  • The second will be at 6:30pm.

The calls will have identical content, so members need only join one.

As is always the case with tele-townhalls, there is no need to dial-in to join. Rather, CFT will use a system that will call each member for whom we have a phone number and invite them to join the live call.

If a member wants to be sure that they are called to join one of the tele-townhalls, or if they have a preference for which one they prefer to join, anyone can sign up at this link.

CFT staff will also be using the Hustle texting program to let members know about the tele-townhalls and to share the sign-up link, and an Action Network email from CFT will be going out to members as well.

In Unity,

Jenny Worley
President, AFT 2121
