Tech Reimbursement Agreement has finally arrived!

We have a win to report in the midst of these tough times. Your Impacts Bargaining Team has continued to negotiate with the District about the impacts of COVID, and after months of pushing, your team is happy to confirm that the District will now provide the equipment necessary to work at home.

  • Our agreement addresses the college’s responsibility to provide technological equipment to faculty who have been working remotely for nearly a year, and to reimburse those faculty who had to purchase their own equipment at the beginning of the pandemic. You can read the full agreement here.

Forum: Save the CCSF Airport Campus

Designed underfunding of our community colleges is hitting our City College hard. CCSF is about to be cut at least 25% leaving hundreds of faculty laid off and thousands of students struggling to complete their educational goals. The CCSF Aircraft Program, a vital career pipeline, is in jeopardy and dozens of students are unable to graduate.

Stop the harm to our CCSF

Dear AFT 2121 Colleagues,

This week’s board packet clarified the District’s intent to issue a devastating 160 pink slips to full-time faculty, taking for granted an untold number of part-time faculty layoffs. This does irreparable harm to our beloved City College of San Francisco. It dismisses the tireless work and commitment of faculty to change lives in their classrooms, it closes doors for thousands of vulnerable students, and it threatens to change the very fabric of our city and the things we hold dear.

AFT has long rejected Interim Chancellor Vurdien’s aptly named “MYBE” (multi-year budget). Interim Chancellor Vurdien has no stake in our City College of San Francisco. Like many Chancellors before him, he will not stay in our community to see the destruction he leaves behind, the faces of those denied a better life, or the pain of the employees who don’t know how they will feed their families. He is not our leader; he will not lead us out of this crisis.

To those who are our leaders: Where are you? What calls you to action? This is the moment to stand up and fight for the mission and existence of our City College.

COVID relief $ | Support UESF educators | Budget teach-in | Forum: Save AMT | Petition: COVID rescue plan

Federal COVID relief funding

The new Federal COVID funding, CRRSAA, will bring $16,223,115 into CCSF this year. CRRSAA is similar to last year’s CARES act, and some sources are referring to it as new CARES Act money.

Some of us have been told that the money must be spent on direct student services, but that is not accurate. There are some restrictions on the money. $3,504,937 of it can only be spent on “emergency financial aid grants”, meaning direct payments to students.

The rest of the money, and anything left over from last year’s CARES Act, can only be spent on programs or items related to COVID recovery. The CRRSAA FAQ gives some guidance starting on question #10. Specific examples of allowed use include technology and training costs for distance education and student support activities associated with COVID. AFT and CFT are actively investigating to see what uses of the money will be allowed. Uses of the CRRSAA are limited and funding is not ongoing. But we expect the District to work with us on exploring creative ways to use these funds to safeguard our institution.

(Saturday, 2/20) UESF holds candlelight vigil for COVID victims and to highlight what’s needed for a safe return to in-person instruction

Our Union siblings in San Francisco’s pre-K-12 education system have been working overtime to get students back into the classroom. They’re ready and doing their part. They needed the District to work with them this week to get an agreement around classroom instruction and for elected leaders to prioritize getting educators vaccinated!

No deal has been reached yet between UESF and SFUSD. UESF teachers are holding a socially distant candlelight vigil tomorrow (2/20) at Civic Center Plaza on Polk Street, directly across the street from City Hall at starting at 5:30pm to honor the nearly half a million lives lost in this country so far, including the 437 San Franciscans and the nearly 50,000 Californians that have died. UESF members also want to make it clear they have been doing their part to get a plan in place to bring students back; and District and City leaders need to step up to do theirs.

Please RSVP to CFT Organizer Valarie Bachelor:vbachelor@cft.org.

Can’t make it? Recruit another member, a friend, a neighbor, a parent or community member to stand in solidarity with us. All supportive Bay Area community members are welcome.

Learn more about not only this COVID-relief money, but also admin’s myths about the college’s budget and the truth about the so-called Student Centered Funding Formula (SCFF). We will also introduce you to some actions you can take right now to make a difference!

Sign the petition: Reinvest in a New Deal for Higher Education

President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and their team have been working at a furious pace to identify what needs to happen fast—containing the coronavirus, getting our country vaccinated, helping struggling Americans and their communities, and reversing the discriminatory, hate-driven executive actions of the last four years. That’s just the start. But Biden and Harris cannot do it alone. Now is the time for us to roll up our sleeves and work together to build back better. It’s time to reinvest in a New Deal for Higher Education so that our nation’s colleges and universities can continue to work for the common good.
There’s no better way to start this work than by passing Biden’s $1.9 trillion rescue proposal—the American Rescue Plan. It’s the Biden plan to curb the coronavirus, get the country vaccinated and invest resources where they are needed most, including $40 billion for higher education. That’s an important first step in getting our colleges and universities the resources they need to meet the challenges ahead.

Action today: DA endorses the Philippine Human Rights Act

DA votes to Endorse Philippine Human Rights Act: Action tomorrow!

Yesterday, the AFT 2121 Delegate Assembly voted unanimously to endorse this Resolution in support of the Philippine Human Rights Act.

Anakbayan-USA and Kabataan Alliance, in partnership with Malaya Movement and the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines, invite you to join an emergency rally to condemn the attacks on indigenous communities in the Philippines. The action will call for the release of the Lumad 26, an end to attacks on Lumad schools, and justice for the Lumad and all land defenders. Speakers from the Philippines will be there to talk about the current situation.

.

On February 15, 2021, elements of the PNP, AFP, DSWD and paramilitary group Alamara entered Lumad Bakwit school in San Carlos University-Talamban Grounds, Cebu City for what they called a “rescue operation,” but in reality was a raid on the displaced Lumad community. Over 40 Lumad students and teachers were rounded up and removed from their evacuation school centers. Twenty-six remain in custody with the Philippine National Police. The attacks on Lumad have only intensified with the passing of the Anti-Terror Law.

We look forward to rally alongside you all to support our Lumad siblings. #FreeLumad26 #SaveLumadSchools

AFT 2121 Nursing faculty organize to take back their department!

AFT 2121 members in CCSF’s Registered Nursing (RN) Department have been dealing with a situation familiar to many of you: their department is under-staffed and the faculty in it are overworked and under-paid.

The Nursing Department is at risk of losing its Board of Registered Nursing accreditation, but the good news is that RN faculty are speaking up on behalf of their program, their students, and their community. Last week, AFT 2121 members in the RN Department delivered a petition signed by nearly the entire department calling on CCSF Leadership and the Board of Trustees to provide the resources needed to maintain CCSF’s reputation as one of the most respected nursing schools in the region.

RN AFT 2121 faculty know how valuable their department is to the entire Bay Area– something the COVID-19 pandemic has made even more clear–so they’re standing up and saying with one voice: CCSF is essential and needs to be saved. And over 1,000 fellow AFT 2121 members are standing with them.
