Join Striking Workers at Kaiser!

Calling all AFT 2121 Members- Put on your union t-shirt and join your labor siblings on the picket line in solidarity with striking Stationary Engineers Local 39 at Kaiser!

For over 8 weeks the essential workers of Stationary Engineers Local 39 have been on strike at Kaiser’s Northern California locations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kaiser Permanente has made $13 billion in profits. However, rather than spend that money on increased core staffing,

Kaiser has proposed to float engineers between facilities. This model would institutionalize the staffing shortages that have already hurt patients and workers. Rather than accept this takeaway, engineers have been on strike for nearly two months, and we must support them in their fight for better working conditions.

An injury to one is an injury to all. That’s why Thursday and Friday of this week several unions of essential health care workers will be holding strikes in solidarity with Local 39. SEIU UHW, OPEIU Local 29 and IFPTE Local 20 were ON STRIKE in solidarity today. Tomorrow, CNA and NUHW will join their fellow workers in Local 39 in a one-day sympathy strike.

Come join a picket and show Kaiser that the California labor movement stands with the essential workers of Local 39.

Friday, Nov 19th, 7am-10am and 2pm-5pm: Use this link to confirm the picket time you can join.

UC-AFT WINS calls off STRIKE!

UC-AFT WENT ON STRIKE THIS MORNING AND WON!

Your siblings in UC-AFT called for an Unfair Labor Practices strike at nine UC campuses throughout the state today and tomorrow and won significant advancements in job stability, workload, compensation, and paid family leave.

To do this your union siblings in AC-AFT organized and fought for 2 1/2 years to back up their negotiations team! They:

  • By a 91% margin, voted to authorize a strike

  • Sent over 2500 letters to UC administrators

  • Observed negotiations on Zoom (nearly 2000 members attended!)

  • Submitted 1000+ public comments to the UC Board of Regents and signed up to testify in public meetings

  • Made hundreds of phone calls to President Drake’s office

  • Tweeted at @UCPrezDrake hundreds of times in the last few days alone

  • Hundreds showed up for car caravans and virtual rallies (at the height of the pandemic!)

Congrats to UC-AFT members on their successful campaign!

Social distancing, Spring 2022 | UC-AFT on STRIKE!

Social distancing, Spring 2022

If we become a “fully vaccinated” school, the CDC would allow us to remove social distancing rules. This has created a huge campus buzz. To be clear, in most departments a policy change is NOT necessary to add sections and create more access for our students – HEERF funds pay for that, and the college had already planned to add FTE as needed for distancing.

But we are not yet a fully vaccinated school. With COVID cases on the rise, and other safety measures being used inconsistently around the college, it’s not clear when we will be able to safely remove distancing. AFT polled members and found mixed results. 34.4% of respondents said they support removing social distancing requirements, 47.6% said they oppose it, and the rest were undecided. Results varied based on department and whether the respondents expect to work in person next semester. For more detailed results click here.

As of Wednesday morning, administration is recommending that we keep social distancing rules for Spring. As a union, we support measures that protect the health and safety of members and of our community. These policies are not about our convenience – they’re in place to protect the most vulnerable. In most departments, our college can choose to expand access for students by simply adding sections instead of changing policies.

What you can do:
Help CCSF become a fully vaccinated school! To date, only about 65% of faculty have reported their vaccination status or applied for exemptions. That won’t be enough. Report your status or apply for an exemption here: https://www.ccsf.edu/covid-19-updates

UC-AFT on Strike!

Your siblings in UC-AFT have called for an Unfair Labor Practices strike on 11/17 and 11/18. The strike will take place at nine UC campuses throughout the state.

This strike is about a pattern of bad faith bargaining and unfair labor practices committed by UC management. Now AFT members are saying enough is enough.

Come join the picket line at UC Berkeley!

Cast COPE vote now | Speak up for emergency housing

At today’s COPE meeting, members discussed a potential endorsement for a California State Assemblymember in AD 17.

Today, COPE also heard from those advocating for Sup Preston’s proposed Emergency Housing Acquisition Program, supplemental appropriation that would fund social housing in accordance with Prop I. The funding would increase the City’s capacity to acquire and preserve rental properties amidst time-limited opportunities to remove housing from the speculative market and permanently preserve units at affordable rents.

  • 11/17 BOS Committee hearing info: For members who are interested in calling in to Committee on Wednesday, the item is #2 on the agenda, and we anticipate it will be heard starting at 10:45am. Here is the call-in info: (415) 655-0001 / Meeting ID: 2495 103 7123 # #

(Tues. 11/16 deadline) Fill out your survey: Should CCSF End Social Distancing in the Spring?

Last week, Deputy Chancellor Dianna Gonzales and Vice Chancellor Tom Boegel announced the College’s intent to eliminate campus social distancing requirements for Spring 2022. Administration’s intent is to make scheduling easier.

This is not set in stone. Your union has a chance to respond. It is essential that you make your voice heard by filling out a simple survey (link here and below) to help your Return to Campus team plan a response. Please respond by 5pm Tuesday, November 16.

Some facts before you do:

Fact: The college has committed to opening more class sections as necessary to ensure social distancing. HEERF money pays for this. A policy change is not needed to add sections and serve our students.

Fact: We are still living in a pandemic. Health officials are concerned COVID-19 cases may rise again with winter.

Fact: Many other schools, including SFUSD and SFSU, have relaxed social distancing. The CDC allows this for “fully vaccinated” schools.

As a union, we are a collective. We stand up for the most vulnerable among us. We are committed to ensuring our return to campus is safe for workers and students, particularly those from groups disproportionately affected by COVID-19: Black, brown, working-class, older people, and people with disabilities.

We’re also a democracy so please fill out the quick survey and encourage your colleagues to do the same–fill out your survey here : https://bit.ly/RTCSurveyAFT.
