Fall 2021 Evaluations and Tenure Review
Last year, AFT 2121 negotiated a streamlined process for emergency COVID conditions. Now, in Fall 2021, we are still using that streamlined process. We’ve been getting a lot of questions about this, especially since Tom Boegel‘s confusing memo to evaluation committees. Here are the main points that need clarification:
- Student surveys for temporary remote assignments, for all types of evaluation, have been shortened. You can find those at the end of the 2020 agreement.
- Faculty who are not under tenure review may choose whether or not they wish to be observed.
- Faculty under tenure review should be observed as normal.
- Where possible, when teams are conducting observations we recommend observing in-person assignments or IOTL-certified classes. Those are more representative of our actual skills and methods than temporary distance ed.
Details are here: Evals are a go!
There’s a video explanation, and if you scroll down the page you’ll see the provisions of the agreement laid out.
The text of the 2021 agreement is here. The section on evals starts on page 6.
AFT 2121 names Holly Stevens your Higher Ed Labor United rep
Unions, professional organizations, and workers at colleges across the country are joining together as Higher Ed Labor United. HELU includes tenured faculty, adjuncts, staff, and student workers. HELU fights at a national level for free college, fair wages and benefits for all campus workers, cancellation of student debt, increasing the number and density of tenured positions, and much more.
AFT 2121 is proud to endorse the HELU Vision Statement, and glad to send ESL instructor Holly Stevens as our first representative to HELU. Congrats, Holly!
