CFT leaders decry hate, stand in solidarity with Asian American and Pacific Islander communities

CFT President Jeff Freitas and CFT Vice President Arlene Inouye released a statement in response to the ongoing violence and racism against Asian Americans, including the killings of eight people this week, six of whom were Asian women, in Northern Georgia.

Included in the statement, Jeff Freitas said: “As educators and classified professionals we have an obligation to use our voice to take a stand against the escalation of racist violence against our communities. We commit ourselves to fighting hate through education and to working with AAPI advocates in our state and local communities to address the crisis.”

Please take a moment to review APALA’s Resource Guide on Anti-Asian Violence, to learn more about actions you can take to address the escalating crisis.

Your CCSF stories are making a difference

Your stories have been powerful. They have been viewed on social media thousands of times and have helped make our huge actions on March 12 a success. It’s clear we should keep them up. So we’re going to continue collecting and sharing student, faculty, and community stories on the value of CCSF, and now we have a new site (courtesy of a new social justice non-profit called HOPE) to streamline the process. Share this link far and wide: https://hope.xyz/edit/ccsf

This site makes the process of recording and uploading your story easy: you and your students can do it all in one place. Share your 90 second story in response to one of the prompts, and ask your students, alumni, and community allies to do the same because this is part of how we win–we make this fight a question of values and we call on our community to stand up for value we know CCSF offers. We will continue sharing these stories on social media while tagging local and state leaders as well as community groups and media outlets. So speak your truth and let the Bay Area know what’s at stake.

Save the Date: City Hall Zoom hearing on saving our CCSF

On the heels of more than 600 participants coming out to defend CCSF on March 12th, Supervisor Ronen has called a hearing of the San Francisco Joint Education Committee to address these questions:

  • Is the city providing CCSF with enough support for the college to be able adequately help SF residents recover from the COVID crisis?
  • Short term, how can the city leverage state & federal COVID aid to support CCSF?
  • Long term, what opportunities exist for the City to help address the chronic underfunding of CCSF by making greater, ongoing investments into CCSF?

City and State leaders must take action now to protect our College in the immediate and long term— the future of our students and our City depend on it.

It’s time for the California Tax on Extreme Wealth!

CFT has joined with legislative leaders from throughout California to introduce the California Tax on Extreme Wealth. Sponsored by CFT, the legislation would implement a 1% tax on wealth in excess of $50 million per household in our state, with an additional 0.5% on wealth in excess of a billion dollars, to raise over $22 billion a year to fund our recovery and to rebuild our economy.

Take the pledge to support the California Tax on Extreme Wealth

It asks those who have made so much to contribute a small percentage of their extreme wealth so that our families and our communities can recover from the pandemic and rebuild their lives.

Since the beginning of the pandemic last March, while too many Californians have suffered gut-wrenching pain and loss, billionaires in our state alone have increased their wealth by over $500 billion.

The California Tax on Extreme Wealth simply asks these folks to pay their fair share so that we may all prosper.

Please take the pledge today in support of the California Tax on Extreme Wealth. Our families and our communities are worth it!
