All part-time librarians laid off!
Last week, the District laid off all part-time librarians. This represents a 37% cut to library faculty in the last two years.
This is yet another example of the District taking advantage of the vulnerability of part-time “temporary” employees. There are 17 full-time librarians at CCSF, and the library FTEF was coincidentally cut to 17.
Library buildings will be closed. So what work could librarians do? Just ask English faculty who partnered with librarians in 2019 on a pilot program to embed librarians in ENGL 1AS classes. Students and faculty had access to a librarian dedicated to the students and assignments in an individual class. These new cuts represent the lost opportunity to expand that same program to 150 classes in English, Diversity Studies, Health Ed, History, and more. Our students and faculty need MORE support during this difficult and confusing time, not less.
The critical information literacy skills that librarians teach improve research and study habits at school and in life, help students write better research papers, and provide a foundation for critical analysis of the fake news and flood of misinformation students face in an online world.
Shame on our administration for laying off faculty instead of providing the support our students need to succeed in this new environment!
Join us in calling on the Mayor and Board of Supervisors to establish the Workforce Education Recovery Fund to prevent further cuts to vital student support services.
EDD unemployment backlogs
Some part-time faculty have still not received unemployment benefits. We have received many, many messages from faculty who are stressed by the breakdown of the EDD application process. Many who applied on May 20 have still not had a response about eligibility or received any benefits. There doesn’t seem to be any logic to how claims are being processed, as some faculty received benefits right away, while others are still waiting.
What can you do if this sounds familiar?
Some people have had success by calling and emailing repeatedly. Keep trying! But other calls and emails go unanswered into the void.
The advice of CFT at the state level is to contact your State Assembly Representative. Most have liaisons to help with EDD related issues. If you aren’t sure who your Assembly Representative is, go to findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov
CFT also recommends not re-applying. Turning in multiple applications can confuse things even more and cause additional delays.
