As we all struggle to cope with the changes to our lives, AFT 2121 and the District have come to an agreement about the impacts on our wages and benefits.
Faculty pay and benefits will continue for Spring semester. The agreement commits the District to honoring faculty’s pay, load, benefits, seniority count, and other contractual rights as if the COVID-19 closures had never happened.
This applies to all faculty assignments, including non-credit, contract ed, instructionally-related, and short-term assignments. The formal written agreement does not spell out every contingency, however. If issues come up in individual cases, the District has said they will work with us to resolve them.
That means that we are still employed. We cannot file for unemployment until our official assignments end, which is May 21 for most of us.
As a stop-gap, instructors are moving lessons online and counselors are holding remote appointments. We understand that these are not real substitutes for our regular classes and services. But where we can continue to work with our students, we should. Administration has asked everyone to use Canvas, so that student participation can be tracked and verified. If Canvas won’t work for your class or your students, talk to your chair.
Importantly, the District said that they intend to work collaboratively with AFT 2121 on whatever issues still need attention.
