Cuts fightback | Flex Day

AFT speaks out against cuts at Feb. 27 Board of Trustees meeting

AFT members joined AFT 2121 President Jenny Worley in protesting the massive cuts at CCCSF. In particular, Pres. Worley and retired auditing instructor Susanna Atwood challenged the latest PGC Budget Committee recommendation to reduce full-time equivalent faculty (FTEF) next year, 2020/21, from 1400 to 1200, which translates to a cut of 1,000 more classes. Both also urged the Board to reject the committee’s recommendation to increase the college’s fund balance to 9.6% in a single year. Other AFT members described the hardship on faculty and students, including loss of educational opportunity, loss of income and health benefits. The Board appeared to be backing off the creation of a cash reserve next year, and instead focus on balancing the budget while maintaining the 5% minimum Fund Balance recommended by the State Chancellor.

What’s next? Rally & Kickoff for CHEF!

Join Supervisor Gordon Mar, AFT 2121, Jobs with Justice, and other allies in calling on the City of San Francisco to create the Community Higher Education Fund (CHEF) as a permanent source of funding for CCSF that will help stop and reverse many of the recent cuts to our CCSF that have deeply impacted our communities.

Over the last few semesters our beloved City College has lost hundreds of classes, faculty have lost their jobs and healthcare, our diverse curriculum has been slashed, and our students have suffered. The people of San Francisco have made it clear that these cuts won’t heal! It’s why we’ve seen a number of rallies, speak-outs, legislative efforts, and more to stop the downsizing of CCSF, many of them led by our own students.

Let’s show our elected leaders that CCSF is important to San Franciscans and we are committed to keeping the community in our community college!
