Attend the Board meeting today & special meeting report back

Yesterday, AFT 2121 rank-and-file members held a special general membership meeting to develop plans for resisting the cuts and the damage to our colleagues, students, programs, and communities.

We discussed statewide and local funding strategies, and members signed up to gather signatures for Schools and Communities First, which, if passed, will bring an estimated $20M annually to City College. Help get signatures for the Schools and Communities First Initiative: sign up to volunteer.

We also talked about the possibility of re-starting our strike fund, and committed to having one on one conversations with members about that possibility. Email Member Organizer Tim Killikelly to get involved (tkillikelly@aft2121.org).

We shared new information about the college budget, including administration’s plan to pad the reserves in Fall semester by slashing 1000 classes. Please sign up to speak out against this at the Board of Trustees meeting today, Thursday, 2/27 on Ocean in Conlan 101. Public comment will begin around 6:15pm.

Finally, while faculty and students have gone to the wall to save our college, the Chancellor has sabotaged our most recent efforts. Citing that and other issues, a member made a motion from the floor proposing that AFT 2121 take the position that the Board of Trustees should fire Mark Rocha for cause. The motion passed 17-12, with four members abstaining. AFT 2121 leadership asks any members not able to attend yesterday’s meeting to give input to their department union rep (aka precinct rep or delegate), or to attend our upcoming Flex workshop, Delegate Assembly, and general membership meetings:

  • March 3, AFT 2121 Flex Day Workshop, 1:30-2:30pm, room TBD (we can not take votes on official union business during Flex Day meetings but please join us for info and discussion).
  • March 24, Regular General Membership Meeting, 3-5pm, MUB 261
  • April 21, Delegate Assembly Meeting, 3-5pm, Southeast Campus room 303
