Unemployment Insurance for Faculty Who Work Part-Time

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about applying for unemployment. Here are a few quick points.  For more details, please see our AFT 2121 unemployment page.

— Faculty who work part-time are eligible whether or not we expect to have an assignment the following semester.

— Apply on or immediately after your last day of work. For faculty who have semester-long assignments, the last day is officially 12/20/2019, even if that doesn’t match your specific work schedule. If you have only short-term assignments, your official last day of work is the last day of your assignment.

— If your CCSF assignment ends but you still have some work (either from another employer, or a reduced CCSF assignment) you may still be eligible. EDD may reduce your benefit amount, however. If you’re not sure they’ll consider you unemployed, the best way to find out is to apply.

— If you have another employer, you’ll have to report your income from each employer separately.

JANUARY HEALTH PREMIUMS FOR FACULTY WORKING PART-TIME

If your load is under 50% in Spring, your benefits would normally be cut off on January 1. But now there’s a way for part-time faculty to extend their benefits for one more month.

  • If you have a Spring 2020 assignment worth 50% or more, your benefits will continue as normal and you don’t need to worry about this.
  • If you have no assignment in Spring, you can extend your benefits through January by paying the employee part of the premium to the college by December 27th. Your benefits will continue through January 31st.
  • If you’re enrolled in Kaiser Member Only, you have no premium to pay. Your benefits will continue through January 31st automatically. You don’t have to do anything to arrange it.
  • If you have an assignment, but it’s less than 50%, the January deduction will be taken from your January paycheck. Benefits will continue through January 31st. You don’t have to do anything to arrange it.
  • If you pay the college for the premium, and then receive an assignment over 50%, they will refund the payment you made. The refund should happen at the end of February.
  • If you do not pay by December 27th, and you do not have a Spring assignment, your benefits will end January 1.

DENTAL INSURANCE FOR RETIREES WHO WORKED FULL-TIME BEFORE RETIREMENT

If you’re enrolled in AB 528 Dental, please note that the District is changing its payment policy. All payments will be due on the first of each month, starting January 1, 2020. Failure to pay in full may result in termination of your dental insurance.

Our Retiree Chapter is working to negotiate a fair process for these payments. In the meantime, make sure you get your payment to CCSF HR by the 1st.

Email BOT to call a Special Board Meeting to restore our Spring Schedule

Act now and send this sample email to call for a Special Board Meeting:
Dear Trustee Randolph,

After a huge grassroots campaign, the CCSF community was able to get an ordinance introduced by Supervisor Shamann Walton to create emergency bridge funds for the Spring Schedule, which lost over 300+ classes last November at the directive of Chancellor Mark Rocha. In an email to our City Officials, including the Mayor, the Chancellor said he had “the full support of the CCSF Board of Trustees” to move forward with these cancellations and that “this situation is not an emergency but part of a long-planned restructuring of the academic program” at CCSF.”

We ask you, Trustee Randolph, to immediately call a Special Board Meeting to restore our Spring Schedule, to have a full discussion on the process of making these cuts, and to discuss the actions that Chancellor Rocha took to undermine the efforts your constituents were taking to secure vital resources in this time of crisis. We also ask that this meeting be called immediately.

Thank you,

*your name* (include if you are a student of CCSF)
