Speak out about the cuts: Board meeting and sign on letter

The Spring 2020 schedule is coming out and we are hearing about further cuts. Many of our colleagues will lose assignments, classes, and healthcare. Our students will lose educational opportunities. At the next Board of Trustees on Thursday, November 14 in Conlan Hall 101 we urge you to join us in making a public comment support our colleagues and students who are being hurt by further cuts to our college.

Chancellor Rocha’s solution to our current budget issues is to cut more classes, coordination time, and library and counseling services for students. AFT 2121 believes we can’t cut our way out of this problem. Our solution is to address the chronic underfunding of public education.

Locally, we are working towards creating the Community Higher Education Fund (CHEF) modeled on the Public Education Enrichment Fund (PEEF) that our city has for PreK-12 students. CHEF, like PEEF, would fund programs and needs that the State does not provide. CHEF would help our entire college by supporting programs like ESL, Career and Technical Education, Ethnic Studies and Transitional Studies.

Statewide, we are working with the California Federation of Teachers and many pro-education statewide organizations. Schools and Communities First is a state initiative that will change a loophole in Prop 13 to make businesses finally pay their fair share and will have no impact on property taxes for residential homeowners.

We are working to get these measures on the ballot for the November 2020 elections. The time to fund public education is now!

Join us at the board meeting on Thurs. 11/14 to let the CCSF Trustees know the cuts must stop! We expect them to work with us to help fund our college’s future.

See you on November 14th. Wear your #RedForEd AFT 2121 t-shirt. Let Athena Waid (awaid@aft2121.org) know if you need one. We’ll update on the time for public comments next week. If you’re able to attend the meeting but not able to give public comment please come wearing your AFT 2121 t-shirt and stand in solidarity with those who are able to speak up.
