Chancellor walks back admin salary increases

In response to weeks of protest by students, AFT 2121, and community members, Chancellor Rocha yesterday scaled back his earlier proposal for exorbitant administrative salary increases of up to 90%. At last night’s board meeting he presented a substantially revised proposal for far more modest pay increases.

The new proposal, which the Board approved, divides the raises across two phases. Phase 1, retroactive to July 1, 2019, awards across-the-board 10% raises to all administrators (except the very top tier, who get no increase in Phase 1). Phase 2 of the new proposal allows additional increases if an independent budget analyst determines that they are warranted.

The idea of consulting an independent budget analyst was proposed by Trustee Ivy Lee, Chair of the Board’s Budget Committee, who voted against implementing the new salary scale without the input of an independent analyst.

AFT 2121 is pleased that the previously proposed increases have been scaled back, leaving more resources to be used toward classes and student services. However, like Trustee Lee, we are concerned about moving forward without all the necessary budget data, and will continue to monitor the selection of the budget analyst and the implementation of any Phase 2 increases.
