Negotiations: Stay strong | More cuts to college services | More…

(Thurs. 4/26 and beyond) We’ve made huge progress in negotiations: We have to keep going!

This Thursday (4/26) stand with our Bargaining Team, build more momentum:

  • 3:00pm (MUB 261) “Building our power teach in”
A report from Bargaining Team members on our bargaining process and what to expect next.
  • 4:00pm (MUB 140), Public Comment to the Board of Trustees.
Showing up and letting the Board of Trustees know we need a contract is crucial! They are the ones who need to approve our contract. Wear your union T-shirt. Please be there by 4pm to fill out a comment card in order to speak. We encourage members to frame comments to the Board positively, such as, “I love my job because…” and then follow the statement with their own stories of overload and/or the affordability crisis.

    Some statements that are powerful:

    • My only wish is to raise my family in the community I serve.
    • I am close to retirement and was able to have a career in the city that was also my home. I only want the same for new teachers.
    • I just want to be able to pay rent.
    • I may have to leave the city I’ve called home for years because I can’t afford to live here anymore.
    • No one is applying for the open positions in our department because the salary isn’t competitive. We’re all working overload and going crazy! Please come and share your story! This is your contribution to the contract negotiation effort. The bargaining team makes the points in negotiations and members provide the examples and the human face.

Can’t come this week? Rally with us on Wednesday, May 2, at Ocean campus:

  • 12pm, Rally at Ram Plaza
  • 12:45pm, March together to Open Negotiations

Ongoing ways to support:

  • Sponsor a Teach-in by a Bargaining Team Member at your department. Contact Athena Waid at 415-585-2121 to set it up.
  • Wear your AFT 2121 t-shirt or button every Wednesday (or any day!) until we have a contract. If you’re able, we ask that you come together in unity on Wednesdays with your AFT-2121 t-shirts or buttons, take a solidarity photo, and send photos to organizer Athena Waid (awaid@aft2121.org).
  • Re-commit to our Union this semester by signing our new gold card membership form— with its loud, proud commitment to “stick with our union” for a full calendar year.

(Sat. 4/28) SF Tenants and Families for Jane Kim and Mark Leno

Our Union has endorsed two CCSF Champions Jane Kim and Mark Leno in the SF Mayoral race. Jane Kim helped our Union win Free City and Mark Leno helped our Union and CFT win stabilization funding for our CCSF during the accreditation crisis.

If you have been planning to get involved in helping win this election for everyday San Franciscans, now is your chance.

This is your most efficient way of helping. We will be convincing voters to rank choice vote for both Mark Leno and Jane Kim in any order, as well as Yes on Props C, F and G (childcare, right to counsel, and teacher raises.)

More cuts to college services

Library faculty were told public service at all CCSF libraries will be cut 20%. Open hours will remain the same at all locations, but there will be fewer librarians to provide essential services. These mandated cuts are coming from top down, despite an increase in students, continuing enrollment growth, and greater demand for library services. To meet accreditation standards, CCSF added 4 new library locations in the past 3 years with no increase in faculty. Now Administration is cutting librarian staffing, shuttering libraries in the summer, and compromising the one-on-one work that keeps students in school. More students, more locations, greater demand for library services, yet CCSF continues to cut faculty. This does not add up. No more austerity! No more cuts! We must resist work speed-ups and document services that will be denied to students!
