Leadership elections deadline| Our contract: Responding to Janus | more…

Resisting Trump and building power in our contract

Trump and anti-labor interests in this country are attempting to debilitate unions. The Janus case, recently heard before the Supreme Court, threatens labor with a “right to work” law on the federal level. Workers in states with these types of laws have suffered  wage cuts, slashed benefits, and reduced pensions.

In a proud showing that San Francisco is a labor town, the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution urging the Mayor and the Department of Human Resources to work with the public sector unions in San Francisco to ensure their health and success post a Janus v. AFSCME Supreme Court case decision, “by engaging in good faith discussions around implementing a “gold card” membership such as that which is being proposed by the San Francisco Labor Council’s Public Employee Committee, providing annual membership commitments.”

Our AFT 2121 bargaining team will be proposing contract language regarding “Maintenance of Dues Checkoff” that aligns us with this resolution and with labor around the country fighting the current anti-union landscape.

Progress on Constitution and By-Laws

On Feb 27, the Delegate Assembly considered proposed changes our AFT 2121 Constitution and By-Laws regarding the participation of retired union members. The DA referred these proposals to a sub-committee for further work. The sub-committee will present its proposal at the General Assembly meeting on Tuesday, 3/20, and will ask the General Assembly to place those proposals on the April ballot.
