Unemployment news for part-timers
During summer and winter breaks, part-timers without sufficient income from other employment are entitled to receive unemployment insurance benefits. If you apply for benefits, you must report your gross earnings for your last week worked before the break. If you claim benefits for the first (flex) week of the semester following the break, you must report your gross earnings for that week. You may also have to report your gross earnings for the second week of the semester following the break. For instructions on how to report gross earnings, see below.
You should apply as soon as possible on or after the last day of instruction, Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, in order to receive your first check as early as possible. Your application is retroactive to the Sunday of the week in which you apply. If you do not apply on or before Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, you will not be entitled to benefits for the week of Dec. 18-24 (or will not get credit for that week as a waiting period, if applicable). For guidance in applying for unemployment benefits, click here for the "Unemployment Guide CCSF Part-timers.pdf". As of July 8, 2011, the EDD is now issuing Employment Development Department Debit Cards to deliver benefits payment. To read about this change on the EDD website click here.

How to Report Earnings for PBL Assignments
If you are paid by load for a full-term assignment, you are paid a fixed amount for the entire assignment. You are not paid hourly. You are deemed to work and are paid for the same workdays, including flex days, as full-time faculty regardless of which or how many days you actually work.
Last week of Fall 2011, Dec. 18-24:
There are 88 full-time faculty workdays in Fall 2011, including 2 workdays this week (instructional days Dec. 19-20). Follow these steps:
Step 1:Multiply gross biweekly pay (see your pay advice) for all Fall 2011 PBL assignments times 9 = semester pay; (Apprenticeship instructors should use 10, not 9, as they receive 10 checks per semester).
Step 2: Divide semester pay by 88 = daily pay for Fall 2011;
Step 3: Multiply daily pay times 2 = gross PBL earnings for the week to be reported to EDD.
First (flex week) of Spring 2012, Jan. 8-14:
There are 87 full-time faculty workdays in Spring 2012, including 2 workdays this week (flex days Jan. 12-13). Follow these steps:
Step 1: Multiply gross biweekly pay for all Spring 2012 PBL assignments times 9 = semester pay; (Apprenticeship instructors should use 10, not 9, as they receive 10 checks per semester).
Step 2:Divide semester pay by 87 = daily pay for Spring 2012;Step 3: Multiply daily pay times 2 = gross PBL earnings for the week to be reported to EDD.
Second week of Spring 2012, Jan. 15-21:
Gross earnings for this week only need be reported if included with the first week on your Continued Claim form. There are 4 full-time faculty workdays this week (instructional days Jan. 17-20). Multiply your previously calculated daily pay for Spring 2012 by 4 to obtain gross PBL earnings for the week to be reported to EDD.
How to Report Earnings for Hourly Pay Assignments
Last week of Fall 2011, Dec. 18-24:
Multiply the number of hours worked times your hourly pay. The result is your gross hourly earnings for the week to be reported to EDD.
First (flex) week of Spring 2012, Jan. 8-14:
Part-timers paid hourly are paid for a flex day if they have a full-term assignment on the same day of the week that the flex day occurs whether or not they actually work on that flex day. First add all hours assigned full-term on the same days of the week on which flex days occurred (Th and Fr in Spring 2012 because flex days are Th-Fr Jan. 12-13). Then add any additional hours actually worked but not assigned full-term. Then multiply the sum by your hourly pay. The result is your gross hourly earnings for the week to be reported to EDD.
Second week of Spring 2012, Jan. 15-21:
Gross earnings for this week only need be reported if included with the first week on your Continued Claim form. Multiply all hours worked by your hourly pay. The result is your gross hourly earnings for the week to be reported to EDD.
How to answer certain questions on the unemployment application by part-timers
These are the ways to apply for unemployment:
1. ON-LINE: edd.ca.gov/eapply4ui
2. BY FILLING OUT AN APPLICATION (DE 110I) AND MAILING OR FAXING IT.
3. BY VISITING THE EDD OFFICE IN PERSON
4. BY CALLING 1-800-300-5616
Very, very, very important: Use ONLY ONE of the four options. If you send the information using more than one option, it will be automatically rejected because the system assumes that one is fraudulent. It will take extra time to investigate.
